Russian Museum: from Icons to Avant-Garde
Duration 3 hours

Surprisingly underrated by foreign guests of the city, Russian Museum has the extraordinary collection of the Russian Art that spans for over 1000 years! The main collection of the museum is on display in the beautiful Grand Duke Michael's Palace on the Arts Square in the very centre of the city and it offers us the thorough overview of the country's history in general, narrated by means of art.

It is highly recommended to visit not only for art lovers or Russophiles, but for all who want to learn more about the Russian culture and history and take a break from the crowded museums or palaces (it is not getting as full as the Hermitage or imperial summer residences in the high season).

A professional guide or art historian will show you the most outstanding artworks created by the Russian artists between the 10th and 20th centuries and give you the brief outline of the history of the country and its cultural development. You will see medieval Russian icons and items of the applied art, as well as the works by famous Russian artists of the 19th-20th centuries, including Russian Avant-Garde and the Soviet Art, and you will probably recognise some of the prominent writers and artists looking at you from the portraits.

The collection has the works by all the prominent Russian artists of the end of 19th – beg of 20th centuries, arguably, the most flourishing epoch in the Russian painting - Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Vasily Vereshchagin, Boris Kustodiev, Konstantin Korovin, Mikhail Vrubel, Ivan Aivazovsky, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. If you are interested in Art Nouveau and S. Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, you will be pleased to see the works by N. Roerich, A. Benois, K. Somov, L. Bakst. And the paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin and Marc Chagall, the representatives of the Avant-Garde, still serve as the source of an inspiration for artists around the globe.
