Zamoskvorechye is the ancient Moscow district, its name literally means "behind the Moskva River". Located just a few steps away from the Kremlin area it is very different from the aristocratic centre of Moscow. This was the land of archers and then merchants. As almost all Russian philanthropists and art patrons came from the dynasties of merchants, they had their family mansions here. During the first part of the tour you will learn about some of the most influential merchant families of Russia, feel the patriarchal atmosphere that they lived in and visit some of the old Russian churches of the area. After the lunch break on one of the most popular restaurant street of the city you will proceed to the main building of the Tretyakov Gallery, founded by the famous art patron and merchant, Pavel Tretyakov and also situated here. It now houses one of the most important Russian art collections in the world and by getting acquainted you will gradually learn about all the major events of the history of the country.
